Clinical Context & Background

This calculator implements the original 1998 Herndon Cancer and Leukemia Group B recursive-partition classification for adults with advanced malignant mesothelioma entering chemotherapy trials. The six terminal groups use ECOG performance status, age, hemoglobin, white blood cell count, chest pain, and weight loss greater than 5%.
The median survival values and confidence intervals are historical observations from 337 patients accrued from 1984 through 1994, not individualized contemporary predictions. The model does not stage disease, select treatment, or determine trial eligibility. Localized surgically managed disease, recurrent or previously treated disease, and populations outside the original advanced-mesothelioma trial setting require separate assessment.

Yes. It implements the 1998 Herndon six-group recursive tree. Histology, LDH, platelet count, and an age-above-75 flag are not inputs in the published final tree.
